Celebrating the Life of Willie H. Wright

Willie H. Wright gained his wings and peacefully transitioned at 2:07 a.m. on Friday, August 7, 2026. Affectionately known to his siblings as “Brother,” Willie was born on May 2, 1944, in Caroline County, Virginia, to the late Michael Angelo Wright and Lillian Elizabeth Wright. The youngest of seventeen children, he was raised with a deep appreciation for family, faith, hard work, and service; values that remained at the center of his life.

Education was important to Willie. He graduated from Union High School in 1963 and continued his education while working two jobs to support his growing family, ultimately earning a degree in Electrical Engineering. His impeccable work ethic became one of the principles by which he lived: work hard, remain committed, and the rewards will come. His determination led to a career of 25 years with the United States Federal Government, where his work allowed him to travel throughout the world in support of intelligence activities. After retiring from the USG, WIllie continued to work as a government contractor for 17 years, totaling over forty years of service. One of his family’s most memorable experiences was living in Frankfurt, Germany.

On March 7, 1965, Willie married his high school sweetheart, Ellen L. Wright. For 61 years, they remained inseparable, building a life grounded in love, faith, commitment, and family. Willie took great pride in being a devoted husband, father, and provider. To him, providing meant more than putting food on the table; it meant creating opportunities and opening doors for his family.

Willie’s faith was equally important to him. He became a Deacon at an early age and faithfully served his church in numerous capacities, including Chairman of the Deacon Board, Planning Committee, Sunday School Committee, Honorary Flower Member, Pastor’s Aide, and the Sunrise and Thanksgiving Committees. He was also a faithful tither who believed deeply in financial stewardship and generously supported the care, improvement, and preservation of his church for future generations. Willie gave to God’s house in every way he knew how; through his time, talents, leadership, resources, and hands. He also beautified the church by planting flowers outside.

And if there was cooking involved, Willie was there. His famous mashed potatoes and macaroni and cheese became a favorite tradition among family, friends, and his church family. Whether leading from the front, working quietly behind the scenes, repairing something with his own hands, or standing over a pot in the kitchen, Willie believed that service to God meant service to others.

Willie never met a stranger. He loved to talk and could turn a chance encounter at the store, church, or work into a conversation that lasted for hours. A brilliant Electrical Engineer and gifted craftsman, he could build, repair, or create almost anything and he did it with precision. His hands could build, his mind could solve, and his heart was always willing to give.

Above all, Willie loved his family. He leaves to cherish his memory his devoted wife of 61 years, Ellen; three children, Angela (Eric), Gerald (Jo Ann), and Ianthe’ “Tay” (Antoine); five grandchildren, Joshua (Angie), Cody, Makayla, Arianna, and Morgan; four great-grandchildren, Caleb, Olivia, Marlo, and Aubrey; one brother, Michael Wright (Elaine); two sisters, Eloise “Wee” Brandon and Evelyn Thompson; sisters-in-law, Fraulein (William), Rosie Wright, and Dorothy Wright; his devoted brother-in-law, Curtis Wright, Sr.; sons-in-law, Eric Goode and Antoine Peterson; daughter-in-law, Jo Ann Wright, and cousin Flolycia Frances Boxley, each of whom shared a special and loving bond with him. He also leaves more than 40 nieces and nephews and a host of extended family and friends whose lives were touched by his love, generosity, and devotion to family.

Willie “Brother” Wright leaves a legacy that cannot be measured simply by what he accomplished or built, but by the people he loved, the family he provided for, the church he faithfully served, and the lives he touched. Willie shared an especially close bond with his grandson, Joshua “Josh.” Although Josh was his grandson, Willie loved and raised him as a son, and many who knew them assumed that he was. As he did with his own son (Gerald), Willie poured into Josh the same Christian values, strong work ethic, devotion to family, and sense of responsibility that guided his own life. He taught him not only through his words, but by the example he lived each day. To see Josh and Gerald become devoted Christians and family men, reflecting so many of the values Willie held dear, was a source of tremendous pride. In Gerald and Josh, a part of Willie’s legacy lives on. Job well done, Dad. He loved God, loved his family, worked hard, gave generously, and always made time for people. His faith was not simply something he professed, it was something he lived.
