William James "Slim" Johnson accepted the call of the Master and entered eternal rest on June 11, 2022, at the home of his brother, Andrew Johnson in Ruther Glen, Virginia. He was born January 7, 1931, to the late James and Bertha Wright Johnson. William attended the public schools of Caroline County and graduated from Union High School. He accepted Christ and was baptized and joined Saint John Baptist Church.
After graduation, William joined the United States Army where he served in South Korea during the Korean War. He served for two years and received an honorable discharge. William was employed with Hechinger and Bowie Company as a truck driver for 45 years.
William, known to his family as Slim, was married to Ann James Johnson who preceded him in death. He was a very kind person who loved everyone who came into his life, and he would help everyone who needed his help. He had a passion for fixing watches and working on lawnmowers. Slim was also a lover of the furry 4-legged animals and was known to have cared for at least 25 cats at a time.
In addition to his parents and his wife, William was preceded in death by two brothers, Oliver C. and Nathaniel E. Johnson and one sister, Gloria Proctor.
He leaves to cherish his memory, stepdaughters, Arlene Chapman and Marsha Newsome; one sister, Bertha I. Byrd; three brothers, Rolland (Helen), Elmer D. and Andrew Johnson; nephews, Oliver Johnson, Jr., Elmer, Johnson, Jr; Stacy Johnson, Edwin Johnson, Wanzer Smith, David Johnson, and Trevor Johnson; nieces, Sheila Harrison, Chanie Mayo and Atanza Smith; two aunts, Viola Shelton and Elsie Childs; one uncle, Raymond Wright, sister-in-law, Mary Johnson and a host of other relatives and friends.
A viewing will be held from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Friday, June 17, 2022 at C.W. Edwards Funeral Home, Inc; 16476 Richmond Turnpike, Bowling Green, Virginia 22427.
Celebration of Life Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 18, 2022 at the funeral home with a viewing one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow in St. John Baptist Church Cemetery, 17080 South River Road, Woodford, Virginia 22580.
Due to COVID-19 a mask or face covering will be required.
