On August 2, 2014, William H. Fortune entered into eternal rest at his residence. He was born in Steelton, PA on October 28, 1918 to the late Bidy and Idell Fortune. He attended Caroline County Public Schools.
Early in life he accepted Jesus Christ and became a member of Jerusalem Baptist Church, Sparta, VA. He later transferred his membership to Saint John Baptist Church in Milford, VA where he remained an active member.
On June 24, 1939, William wed Caroline Childs and they were married for 70 years. To this union, six children were born. Sylvia Mae Gray, Judith Doyle Scott, Barbara Trevor Brooks and three other children Melvin Douglas Fortune, Patricia Anne Key and William Purcell Fortune, who preceded him in death.
William was employed by Quantico Marine Corps Base for 36 years and retired in 1977. After retirement, he was employed with the Caroline County Public School System.
William was active in the ministries at Saint John which included the Male Chorus, Trustee Ministry, and committed to the maintenance of the church property. He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge Number 125.
He leaves cherished and fond memories to his loving and devoted daughters, Sylvia Mae Gray (Alfred) of Ruther Glen, VA, Judith D. Scott (Edgar) of Oklahoma City, OK, and Barbara T. Brooks (Leon) of King William, VA; one daughter-in-law, Gwendolyn Fortune of Capital Heights, MD; ten grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; six-step grandchildren; three brothers, Clifton, Fred (Agnes) and Lucius (Myrtle); and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Visitation will be Thursday, August 7, from 12 noon to 8 p.m. at C. W. Edwards Funeral Home, 16476 Richmond Turnpike, Bowling Green, VA 22427 and one hour before the service on Friday at the church.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, August 8, at St. John Baptist Church, 17080 South River Road, Woodford, VA 22580 with Rev. Dr. W. G. Berryman officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
