Walter was born on September 29, 1944, to the late Leroy and Rosa Lee Monroe and was the youngest of their 10 children. On March 4, 2026, at the age of 81, the Lord gently called him home, giving him his wings and welcoming him into eternal rest.

Walter accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized at St. John Baptist Church in Woodford, Virginia. More than anything, he loved God deeply, and that love was reflected in the quiet, personal relationship he shared with Him, a relationship that became a source of strength, peace, and comfort throughout his life.

Walter received his education in the Caroline County Public School System. He began his career at Keller Aluminum Plant in Milford, Virginia, later worked for the RF&P Railroad, and retired from the Virginia Department of Transportation. Even after retirement, because of his love for being outdoors, working with his hands, and tending the land, he continued to work for Gary Watts Construction.

When Walter wasn't working, you could often find him sitting outside, talking with family and friends who stopped by, working in his garden, or tending to his yard. He had a great sense of humor, and boy, could he tell a story about just anybody, and even imitate their voice, in a way that would keep you laughing. He never minded sharing his warm smile. Walter gave freely and was always willing to help, especially when it came to caring for his siblings whenever he could. In his younger days, Friday nights were often spent going to wrestling matches at the Richmond Coliseum. He also enjoyed watching wrestling, boxing, and Westerns on TV in his basement, as well as his daily trips to the convenience store with his riding partner, Bernard. Walter loved being outside and would often stay out until dark before coming in to watch his favorite shows, especially Gunsmoke.

In December 1965, he was united in holy matrimony to Judy Abrams Monroe, and they shared more than 60 years of marriage. From this union, two daughters were born: Denise M. Monroe and Dita M. Ferguson.

He was preceded in death by his six brothers, Roosevelt, Willis, Thomas, Julian, Leroy Jr., and Eddie Monroe; and three sisters, Anna Washington, Elizabeth Rock, and Mary Malloy.

He leaves to cherish his memory and carry on his legacy: his wife, Judy Monroe; his daughters, Denise Monroe and Dita Ferguson (Robert); two granddaughters, Latasha Monroe and Jaidyn Ferguson; one grandson, Brandon Monroe; three great-grandchildren, Jabari Monroe, Lasani Monroe-Foxx, and Remington Green; one devoted friend and riding partner, Bernard Morton; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends. Walter Monroe was a devoted family man, loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend.

A Celebration of Life Service,  will be held at 1:00  p.m. on Sunday,  March 15, 2026, at  St. John Baptist Church, 17080 South River Road, Woodford, Virginia 22580, with a viewing one hour prior to the service.

Interment will follow in the St. John Baptist Church Cemetery.
