Virginia Lee
Latney
Feb 9, 1939 — Dec 23, 2025
Bowling Green
Virginia "Patsy" "Pat" Lee Latney was born on February 9, 1939 in Chilesburg, VA to the late Charles J. Gray and Mary Elizabeth Gray-Yarborough. She was the fourth of ten children. Patsy departed this life on Tuesday, December 23, 2025, at her home in Bowling Green, VA.
Patsy gave her life to Christ at an early age and was a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church in Ruther Glen, VA and later joined Shiloh Baptist Church in Bowling Green, VA. She met and married the love of her life James "Sunny" Ryland Latney in high school in 1956. They were married for almost 51 years upon his death in 2006. From this union, they were blessed with two daughters: Cheryl Sylvester (William) of Accokeek, MD and Sandra L. Brown of Milford, VA.
Patsy received her education at the following schools: St. John's Primary, Balty Elementary, and Union High in Caroline County, Virginia. She worked for the Federal Government for the Army & Air Force Exchange Service (AAFES), Fort Lee, Fort Belvoir Exchange, and Fort A. P. Hill for 33 years. While working at AAFES, she received many awards, certificates, and the U.S. Army Medal of Honor when she retired in 2000.
Patsy joined Shiloh Baptist Church in Bowling Green, VA under the leadership of Reverend A. P. Young where she was honored as "Mother of the Church." Patsy loved the Lord, her family, Shiloh and Ebenezer Church members. While serving at Shiloh, she served on the following ministries: Pastor's Aide, Chairperson of the Deaconess Board, Secretary of the Missionary for 13 years, Hospitality Committee, Nurses' Unit, Birthday Club, and Homecoming Committee. Patsy attended Sunday School and Bible Study faithfully until her health began to fail. She enjoyed shopping, participating in community service activities, working with potted flowers, and making floral arrangements. Patsy was actively involved in the Mattaponi Baptist Association of Virginia. Patsy enjoyed being busy and believed that an idle mind resulted in boredom. She enjoyed missionary work and poured out her love to everyone that she encountered. Patsy's motto was to "make the best of what you have, and your blessing will flow significantly." Her favorite scripture was, "To everything there is a season, a time for every purpose under heaven." Ecclesiastes 3:1 (NKJV).
Patsy was preceded in death by her husband, James "Sunny" Ryland Latney, her parents Charles J. Gray and Mary Elizabeth Gray-Yarborough, her father-in-law and mother-in law, Mr. & Mrs. Oliver Latney, Sr.; one son-in-law: Frank M.
