Thurman Johnson was born on May 22, 1928, to the late Inez Banks and Robert Johnson in King and Queen County, Virginia. He departed this life on March 19, 2024, peacefully with family at his side.

Thurman attended school in King and Queen County, proudly telling anyone who would listen that he made it all the way to the 6th grade. Despite minimal education he was extremely smart in business and financial matters. He had many stories to share about the "good old times" when he was younger.  He took pride in remembering that he was one of the first to vote in our county during segregated times. Thurman had a strong belief in God, and He joined First Mount Olive Baptist Church at an early age. He was one of ten children, all who preceded him in death.

For thirteen years Thurman was an entrepreneur and ran his own business, "Johnson's Restaurant". It was known for its delicious fried chicken, dances, and music. There was also a ballpark where many games occurred over the years on his field.  Thurman loved baseball and would watch games whenever he had a chance. Aside from running his business, Thurman was also an employee at the Chesapeake Corporation. He retired after 43 years of safety and excellence. After retirement he spent his time fishing, cooking, and spending time with his family and friends.

He married the love of his life, his wife, Albania in 1948. From this union two children were born, a son and a daughter Maxine who preceded him in death.

He leaves to cherish his memory a Son, Thurman Johnson Jr, a daughter Patricia Alston, devoted grand-children James (Anitra), LaToya (Marcus) and Corey, great grandchildren Ahmad, Adriana, Malik, and Zayden. A son in law Jimmy, A loyal niece Kimberly Johnson and very special friend and caregiver Ms. Mattie Broaddus. A very special thanks to neighbors and friends Shakeara and Taishonna Stewart and Mr. and Mrs. Greg Johnson.

Celebration of life service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 30, 2024, at First Mt. Olive Baptist Church,7820 Newtown Road, Newtown, Virginia 23126 with a viewing one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
