Susie Alcenia Clark was born on July 8, 1944, in Central Point, Virginia to the late Glassel Romaine Clark.    Susie departed this life on December 27, 2023, at her Northside residence in Richmond, Va.

Susie, known to many as 'Babes' was baptized and became a member of St. Stephen's Baptist Church at an early age.   Susie was a member of the Senior Choir, the Missionary Circle and Sunday School.   Susie relied on family and friends for transportation to attend church in the country.  When she did not have transportation, she attended churches in Richmond singing in different choirs.   One of the churches she attended frequently, was All Soul's Presbyterian Church.

Susie attended Caroline County Public Schools, graduating from Union High School in 1963.   Susie was a member of the Union High School Chorus under the direction of Mrs. Ruth Y. Wilson.   Susie lived with and was raised by Sue and Wille Jeter along with her grandmother, Pearl Reynolds.   After graduation, Susie moved to Richmond to live with her mother, until her mother passed in 2016.

Susie worked at the Medical College of Virginia as an elevator operator for a brief time.   Afterwards, she worked at a veterinarian office as a pet groomer.   Susie's last place of employment before retiring was at Anthem Healthcare as a mail sorter.

Susie was often strong-willed to a fault and determined to stay independent. Even after several trips and falls over the years, (some serious), she remained physically active, continuing her desired daily routine.   She did not drive or own a vehicle, however that never prevented her from walking or catching the city bus every day to get where she wanted to go, rain or shine.  Even with the many changes implemented during the pandemic, Susie mastered the route changes of the Richmond Transit System to get where she wanted to go.

In James 1:17 we can read that 'Every good and perfect gift is from God above.'  The Bible tells us that we are born with distinct talents and gifts that set us apart from each other.   Susie was blessed with a remarkable GIFT; a beautiful, effortless sounding lyric coloratura soprano voice.   Professional opera singers undergo extensive training to develop their vocal strength, control and projection.   Susie's ability to effortlessly sing classical opera, reach great volume and voice range was GOD given.   Susie had no formal training, just practicing and rehearsing in the church choir under the musical direction of Mrs. Louise B. Carter and Mrs. Elizabeth Ellison.   Susie did not possess silver or gold, but she had a beautiful gift that she enjoyed sharing with others.   Two of Susie's favorite solos to sing were 'The Tribute' by Andre Crouch and 'My Mother's Prayer.'    No one enjoyed hearing Susie sing more than her mother who was often tearfully filled with joy and pride.

Susie leaves to cherish her memory, one uncle, William 'Bill' Reynolds of Mechanicsville, VA: seven cousins, 'Florence Hodges of Fredericksburg, VA, Algia B. Clarke (Helen) of Chesterfield, VA, Sandra Ware (Earl) of Tappahannock, VA, Glenda Rinaldi of Milford, VA, Dena Currie, Ken Reynolds, both of Mechanicsville, VA and Carla Mullen of Crum Lynne, PA; longtime friends Andrea Lofton, Douglas Lofton III, Chloe Alexandrea, Marian Branch and Rev. Yolanda Fox; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 13, 2024, at St. Stephens Baptist Church, 29436 Sparta Road, Milford, Virginia 22514 with family receiving friends from 1:30 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. Inurnment will follow in church cemetery.
