Shirley Virginia Johnson Twiggs departed this life at home in the early morning hours on December 10, 2021.  Shirley was born on November 2, 1932 in Penola, Virginia. She was the ninth of nine children of the late James Lott and Lou Emma Johnson.

Shirley graduated from Union High School in Caroline County and was a member of Reedy Baptist Church.  She was wed in holy matrimony to Joseph F. Twiggs (who preceded her in death in 2018) on September 10, 1949.  Over the course of her lifetime she worked several different jobs, but the ones that she loved the most were as wife, mother and homemaker, Shirley was quiet and soft-spoken, but strong and fierce when it was needed. She was a model of peace and strength for the family and was "mom" to many of her children's friends.

Shirley leaves to cherish her memory and will be sadly missed by two daughters, Vernelle Twiggs and JoAnne Underwood (devoted son-in-law, Reginald ); son Keith Twiggs ; two loving and devoted grandsons, Reginald II ( ShaJuan ) and Cory ( Christina ) Underwood ; four great-grandchildren, Aaliyah, Elijah, Reginald III and Chance ; sister, Fannie Johnson ; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and other relatives and friends, including devoted friends, Helen Samuel, Shirley Dandridge, Gloria Tolliver, Ruth Fox, Laverne Brown, Suzanne Shaffert and Russell Jenkins .

A Viewing will be held from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, December 19, 2021 at Reedy Baptist Church, 15076 Dry Bridge Road, Ruther Glen, Virginia 22546 after which a private celebration of life service will be held.

Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
