Obituary

Samuel H. Carter, Jr. was born on November 24, 1933 in Sparrows Point, Maryland. He was one of three children born to Rev. Samuel H. Carter, Sr. and Ruth Willis Carter. On Sunday, March 19, 2017, he was called home from labor to reward at Bowling Green Health and Rehabilitation Center in Bowling Green, Virginia.

Samuel moved to Caroline County at an early. He accepted Christ and joined Zion Grove Baptist Church in Woodford, Virginia. He was an active church member, serving as a trustee and participating in many activities and programs.

He graduated from Union High School and attended Virginia Union University in Richmond, Virginia. During his early career he worked at Ft. Belvoir, Cheltenham School, Hanover School for Boys and The U.S. Army Reserves. Samuel retired after 29 years of service as a U.S. Government employee working for the General Services Administration. He was a life long member of Welcome Masonic Lodge #125.

Samuel was a dedicated musician who loved music and worked for numerous years as a choir director, church musician and choir organizer. His love for music was apparent to all and Samuel attended and participated in many programs including The James Cleveland Gospel Music Convention, mass choir collaborations, music seminars, and audio and television tapings. Although his health began to decline, due to Parkinson's disease, Samuel continued to participate in his music ministry as long as he was able.

Samuel was preceded in death by his wife Gloria Alsop Carter

Affectionately known to his family and friends as Haskey, he leaves to cherish his memory, daughter, Marcia Williamson (Alan); son, Samuel Carter, III; six grandchildren, Aliyah Woodyard, Alanna Williamson, Tevin Williamson, Devonte, Carter, Landon Carter and Jeremiah Carter; one great-granddaughter, Yanelly Carter; sisters Mabel Garnett and Nancy Cox; brother, Rufus Carter (Cornelia) and many nephews, extended family members and friends.

A celebration of life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 25, 2017 at Zion Grove Baptist Church, 9450 Fredericksburg Turnpike, Woodford, Virginia 22580 with a viewing one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
