Roscoe Alonza Gwathmey, Jr. 82 of King William County entered eternal rest on January 26, 2026, at Hanover Health and Rehabilitation Center in Mechanicsville, Virginia. He was born on July 21, 1943, in Upshaw (Aylett), Virginia.
He was preceded in death by his parents, father Deacon Roscoe A. Gwathmey, Sr. and mother Deaconess Essie Braxton Gwathmey; his sister, Sedora Gwathmey DeLeaver; and his brother, Deacon Spencer G. Gwathmey.
At an early age, Roscoe accepted Christ and joined St. Paul Baptist Church in Aylett, Virginia. In later years, he faithfully served as a member of the Men's Chorus. He attended Beulahville School and graduated from Hamilton Holmes High School in 1963. During his school years, he was also employed as a school bus driver. Following graduation, Roscoe relocated to Washington, D.C., where he worked in various positions as a security guard and delivery driver.
He later enlisted in the United States Army. After the Army, he returned to Virginia and was employed at Reynolds Metal Company's Reynet Road Plant in the records department and later at the Richmond Newspaper in Hanover, Virginia. After leaving Richmond Newspaper, Roscoe returned to Aylett, Virginia, where he resided at the family homeplace.
Roscoe leaves to cherish his memory his sisters, Saundra G. Taylor and Maurice E. Gwathmey of Aylett, Virginia, Uarda G. Barnes of Richmond, Virginia; his brother, Charles H. Gwathmey (Elizabeth) of Highland Springs, Virginia; two aunts, Laverne Gwathmey and Frances Gwathmey; along with a loving host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at 2:00 pm on Saturday, February 21, 2026, at St. Paul Baptist Church, 1995 Globe Road, Aylett, Virginia 23009 with a viewing one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow in church cemetery.
