Remembering Rosa

Rosa Emma Darby, born on December 4, 1928, was the oldest of nine children born to Ella and Gamaliel Darby in Sharps, Virginia. Rosa's vision was impaired as a child until her namesake Aunt Rose paid for an operation to restore much of her sight. The family moved to Baltimore, Maryland where she grew up on Eden Street in East Baltimore.

Rosa accepted Christ at an early age and was known for having a huge heart showing unconditional love to everyone. Rosa married Milton Young and had three children, Florence, Milton and Timothy while living in Catonsville, Maryland.

Rosa began working for the Federal Government at Fort Meade and continued her career there while raising her children. Later when the family moved to Philadelphia, she worked for the IRS until retirement. Rosa moved back to Baltimore after retirement where she married Glenn Lindsay.

After Glenn passed she moved to Allendale Senior apartments where she met Deacon Ola Phillips whom she also married. There she was a member of New Hope Freewill Baptist Church where she served the Lord faithfully. She and Deacon Phillips also conducted Bible studies in Allendale until he passed.

Soon after, Rosa returned to Virginia to live with her daughter and son-in law for a good number of years until her legs gave way and she moved to Bowling Green Nursing Home which was her last home on earth.

She was affiliated with Beth-El Christian Center while at the nursing home and was faithfully ministered to by Pastors Del and Oliver Coleman.

Rosa will be remembered most of all for her kindness and generosity. A very fond memory is how she baked a birthday cake for her granddaughter Alana and she and Deacon Phillips caught three buses across town to Morgan State University and walked on campus to bring the cake to her "cup cake". Another memory is how she would always find an amount, if only a dollar, to put in a birthday card for a family member or friend. She made long lasting friendships who have kept in contact with her children over the years.

Rosa leaves to morn one sister and three brothers: Camilla, Preston, Larry, and Tony; three children- Florence (Wendell) Sims, Milton Young and Hassan Abdullah; six grandchildren: Estelle, Alana, Nathan, Ciara, Alexis, David; 5 great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and the like.

"I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. "Finally, there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord the righteous judge will give me on that day, and not to me only but also to all who have loved his appearing." 2 Timothy 4-8
