Rolland Allen Johnson was born November 14, 1937, to the late James Edward Johnson and Bertha Lee Wright Johnson of Caroline County, Virginia.  He peacefully departed his earthly life on Wednesday, July 24, 2024, at Henrico Doctors Hospital, Richmond, Virginia, surrounded by his loving family.

Rolland accepted Christ at an early age and was a faithful member of St. John Baptist Church for more than 50 years. His devotion to God and his church were evidenced in many ways. He gave generously of his time and talents by serving on the Usher Board, Men's Chorus, Building Committee, Cemetery Committee, Finance Committee and as Chairman of the Trustee Board, eventually honored as Trustee Emeritus. Many church building improvements and additions were the result of his handiwork.

Rolland attended the public schools of Caroline County and graduated in 1957 from Union High School. During his time as a student, he was an outstanding basketball and baseball player. He was exceptionally talented in industrial arts and developed a love for carpentry and building, under the instruction of the late Dr. Walter Lowe. This became his lifelong passion as he became a certified electrician and contractor, building many homes in his community.

After graduation, Rolland was employed for a short time by Sears & Roebuck in Washington, DC.  In 1959 he began working for the Commonwealth of Virginia as a Maintenance and Grounds Supervisor at Janie Porter Barrett Learning Center for Girls in Hanover, Virginia.  Many of his co-workers remained lifelong friends even after retiring from his job of 37 years.

Rolland was known in the community for his warm personality, big smile and even bigger heart.  He constantly gave of himself and his resources to others. He received great joy through helping others who were in need.  If you called on him, he was always there to do whatever he could. He had a passion for investing in real estate and providing affordable rental properties.  As an extension of his work in the community, in 2002 Rolland joined the C.W. Edwards Funeral Home staff.  Care, compassion and love were reflected in all of Rolland's work. Rolland was a devoted and loving husband, father and grandfather.

In addition to his parents, Rolland was preceded in death by a daughter lost at birth (Baby Johnson), one sister, Gloria Mae Procter, and three brothers, William James Johnson, Oliver C. Johnson, Sr., and Nathaniel Edward Johnson.

He leaves to cherish his memory his devoted wife of 67 years, Helen Carter Johnson; one daughter, Shelia Johnson Harrison (Milton) of Fredericksburg, Virginia; two granddaughters, Tiffany and Bridget Harrison, both of Germantown, Maryland; one sister, Bertha Irene Childs (Wilbur); two brothers, Elmer D. Johnson, and Andrew Johnson; one uncle, Raymond Wright (Barbara); one aunt, Elsie Childs; three sisters-in-law, Mary Johnson, Annie Edwards Anderson, and Ruth Wilson; three bonus sons, Floyd Fortune, Jr,  Dwight Fortune and Edgar (EC) Edwards, Jr.; and a host of nieces and nephews; cousins, and other relatives and friends.

A viewing will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Friday, August 2, 2024, at St. John Baptist Church, 17080 South River Road, Woodford, Virginia 22580.

Celebration of life service will be held at 12 noon on Saturday, August 3,2024 at Caroline High School, 19155 Rogers Clark, Blvd, Milford, Virginia 22514 with a viewing one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow in St. John Baptist Church Cemetery.
