Obituary

Robert Henry Monroe, Sr. affectionately known as "Cadillac" was born to the late Eliza Ann and David Monroe on September 28, 1942 in Caroline County, Virginia. He departed this life on June 24, 2019 in his home surrounded by his loving family.

At an early age he joined St. John Baptist Church in Caroline County, where he was ordained as a Deacon and served faithfully including being chairman of the deacon board as well as many other ministries. He received his education in the Caroline County Public School System. Through his life he held multiple jobs utilizing his carpentry expertise including working for Dr.Walter Lowe, Henry Steigleder, B.R. Pitts & Sons, Caroline County Public Schools, and Kings Dominion Carpentry Department. He retired from Kings Dominion in 2010. It was during his time working for Dr. Lowe that he received his nickname Cadillac.

He met the love of his life Shirley Jean Morton at an early age and they were united in holy matrimony in March of 1963. To this union five children were born.

Cadillac loved the outdoors and could frequently be seen on the tractor caring for his lawn. He was a sports enthusiast and loved watching basketball, baseball and football. He was an avid San Francisco Forty-niners fan. He also enjoyed fishing for relaxation.

He was preceded in death by his parents Eliza and David, his brothers Richard and David and his sisters Bernice and Mary.

He leaves cherished and fond memories to his wife Shirley Monroe and his children; Robert Jr. (Julia), Kevin (Cheryl), Richard (Tiffany), Mark and Tangela; his firstborn grandchild Tony Barner, whom he raised as his own; two brothers, Charles (Mary) and Lloyd; fourteen grandchildren; fifteen great-grandchildren; one brother in law; Jessie Morton (Shelia); two sisters in law, Blanche Childs (Walton) and Mary Croxton;  a special niece whom he considered a daughter Marilyn "Nudcie" Hamn, and a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.

A viewing will be held rom 12:00 noon to 8:00 p.m. on Friday, June 28, 2019 at C.W. Edwards Funeral Home, Inc. 16476 Richmond Turnpike, Bowling Green, Virginia 22427 with family receiving friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 29, 2019 at Saint John Baptist Church, 17080 South River Road, Woodford, Virginia 22580 with a viewing one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
