Deaconess Mildred J. Shepherd, was born September 21, 1935. She was the eighth of eleven children born to the late Woodford and Sophia France Shepherd. Mildred was the last survivor of her siblings. On November 4, 2017, she quietly entered into the Kingdom of God.

She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers and sisters.

Mildred accepted Christ at a young age and was baptized by the late Reverend E.L.R. Guss in the kiddie pond at Saint James. During her time at Saint James, she served in various organizations, the Hospitality Committee, Usher's Ministry, Deaconess Ministry, Mass Choir, Women's Club Ministry, Food Pantry, Senior's Ministry and cooked for the Wednesday night Youth Ministry. She was also the church sexton for many years.

Mildred was employed by the Pollard family for many years as a domestic worker until her health began to decline.

You could often find Mildred at home tending to her flowers, sleeping, working in her puzzle book or watching her all time favorite network, Lifetime. She enjoyed traveling to the beach and found great joy in spending time with her family, but on Sunday morning you could find her right at Saint James, smiling, singing and praising her Lord.

She leaves memories to be cherished by a daughter; Sophia Shepherd-Wormley (Ben); granddaughter, Keiasha Shepherd; grandsons, Denquice Kinard, Russell Wormely, III, Ryan Wormley and Dayvid Kinard; devoted niece and caregivers, Lavarro Minor (Fred); great nieces, Sandra Minor and Towanda Minor (Kenny); special nephew Jimmy Shepherd; special son, Tony Evans; sisters-in-law, Sandra and Thamazine Shepherd; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives and friends.


A viewing will be held from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 9, 2017 at St. James Baptist Church, 19514 Sparta Road, Milford, Virginia 22514, with family receiving from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, November 10, 2017 at St. James Baptist Church with a viewing one hour prior to the service.

Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
