Obituary

Mary B. Jeter , affectionately known as "Bertha" or "Ms. Chancellor" was born March 17, 1934 to the late William W. Sr. and Mary Bernice Beasley Jeter.  Bertha departed this life on November 3, 2020 at her son's home surrounded by family and friends.

At an early age, Bertha joined First Mount Zion Baptist Church in Sparta, Virginia and served faithfully until her health began to fail. She served on numerous committees which included the President of the Usher Board, Chairman of Trustees, Treasurer, Pastor's Aid, Sunday school teacher and the Inspirational choir.

Bertha was known for her devotion to First Mt. Zion Baptist Church, her family and working her flowers in her yard. She could often be found working around the church preparing for special events such as "Homecoming, Pastor's Anniversary" or just making sure things were in order for worship services.

Bertha received her education in Caroline County and graduated from Union High School.  After placing herself thru nursing school, she was employed for 40+ years as a nurse in the burn unit at MCV in Richmond, VA.  During her tenure at MCV, she trained and provided special insight to new nurses on how to become a nurse. Bertha loved to help others and spent her life caring for numerous loved ones.  She was the Matriarch of the family and the glue that kept us together.

Bertha was preceded in death by two sisters, Louise Jeter and Daisy Broaddus and four brothers, George, Kirk, Truett and William "Billy" Jeter, Jr.

She leaves fond and cherished memories to her devoted son Ralph Johnson, Jr (Consuretta) of Ruther Glen, Virginia: a devoted grandson and love of her heart, Rapheal Johnson of Richmond, Virginia: her devoted and caring sisters, Gladys "Beck"Jeter of Ruther Glen, Virginia and Mary "Tiny" McPhail of Sparta, Virginia: a devoted brother, Arthur Earl Jeter of Sparta, Virginia: one sister-in-law, Julia Jeter of Tappahannock, Virginia: a devoted niece Tish Thomas and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
