Obituary

Mary Magalene Childs was born on May 6, 1932, to the late Clyde and Beatrice Jones in Caroline County, Virginia. Mary took her eternal rest on Friday, August 9, 2024.

Mary, affectionately known as "Mary C" by friends and former coworkers, was fun-loving and kindhearted. She was known for her hearty laugh, her love for music, and spending time with her friends and family. When her favorite song played, she was known to cut a step. Her favorite hobbies were Word search puzzles, reading, and watching TV.

Mary was educated in the Caroline County Public Schools. She was employed in Housekeeping at the Holiday Inn and Quality Inn where she met many lifelong friends. She just loved people and never had an unkind word to say about anyone. She lived by the very wise quote we've all heard, "If you don't have anything good to say, don't say anything at all."

Mary loved her Beulah Church family and attending church functions. She loved going to Sunday School and riding the church bus to worship with other churches. She was a faithful member and attended church until her health declined.

Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Rufus Childs; her brothers, Lorenzo and Clarence Jones; a granddaughter, Shannel Lee; great-granddaughter, Lynelle Childs; and great-grandson Tyreek Davis. She was also preceded by one of her best friends and part of the Golden Girls, Matlyn Edwards, and her longtime friend and companion, Roy Fox.

Mary leaves to cherish her memory three daughters; Ernestine Childs, Ruther Glen, Va.; Brenda Childs, Fredericksburg, Va.; and Sandra Scott, Woodford, Va.; six grandchildren; Tonya Childs, Linette Davis, Rufus Davis, Delma Davis, Roscoe Childs, and Tracey Childs; 15 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great grandchildren; one devoted sister, Novarna Williams, Woodford, Va.; one niece, Dale Washington (Leon),Ruther Glen, Va.; one nephew, Dwain Williams(Kathy),Woodford, Va.; devoted friends, AKA "the Golden Girls", her riding buddies, Ophelia Scott and Sadie Armstead; and devoted Fox Family, who cherished her and treated her like family( Cachita and Breta Meyers)

We would also like to thank Minister Angie Kendricks, Deaconess Carolyn Chew, and Sister Bertha Sims for their many visits for they could surely put a smile on her face and make her laugh. Thanks to Frances Wright and Lola Brown for helping with my sister, and my best buddy Julie Brown, who always goes above and beyond to help whenever needed; and a host of other relatives and friends who will miss her dearly.

A visitation will be held from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Friday, August 16, 2024, at C.W. Edwards Funeral Home, Inc. 16476 Richmond Turnpike, Bowling Green, Virginia 22427.
