Louise Evelyn Roane Hickman departed this life peacefully on February 20, 2017 at Henrico Doctors Hospital with her family by her side. She was born January 25, 1937 in King and Queen County to the late Johnnie and Parthenia Roane.
She was married on August 30, 1953 to the late Major Hickman and to this to to this union four sons were born. Major Hickman preceded her in death along with her sisters, Julia Ware, Nannie Richards, Alice Byrd and Susie Holmes.
She accepted Christ at an early age and joined First Mt. Olive Baptist Church (Newtown) and later transferred her membership to New Liberty Baptist Church.
As a member of New Liberty, she was the first Youth Director and started the tots choir. She also headed Hospitality and was president of the Senior Choir. Louise was also very active in serving her community and acted as a surrogate mother to many. She started the Rexburg Beasley Youth Club which then spun off to the Rexburg Royals. She was active in the Essex County Civic League, NAACP, Chairperson of the North Peninsula Club of the National Association of Negro Business and Professional Women's Club, Inc. and a retired bus driver with over 25 years from Essex County School System.
She leaves to cherish her memories, four sons; Major (Hazel)of Tappahannock, Virginia, Donald (Nimmie), Ronald (Tracey) of Fredericksburg, Virginia and Perry Hickman of Rexburg, Virginia; one goddaughter, Christine Young; grandchildren, Jason Wells, Carlos Hickman, Ron Hickman, DJ Hickman, Ryan Hickman and Derek Hickman; great-grandchildren, Jason Jr., JayQuan, Javarie, Alana, Lily, Carlos Jr., Ava and Neema; one sister Ida Pierce of Bowling Green, Virginia; sister-in-law Marion Hickman Taylor of Waverly, Virginia; special friends, Helen Roane, Virginia Young, Etta Wright, Emma Aslock, Frances Pratt and a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.
A viewing will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, February, 22, 2017 at C.W. Edwards Funeral Home, 16476 Richmond Turnpike, Bowling Green, Virginia 22427. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, February 23, 2017 at New Liberty Baptist Church, 33030 Sparta Road, Milford, Virginia with a viewing one hour prior to the service. Rev. Dr. Willie T. Carter will deliver the eulogy. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
