"Death comes to us just to open the door
to the kingdom of God and life evermore."

During the morning hours of May 10, 2014, the "angel of mercy" came and opened death's door so the soul of our beloved Lawrence could "take flight" from the cares and concerns of this earthly existence and enter into the presence of God and eternal rest. Known fondly to family and friends as Larry, he was the son of Lucy Paige Grant and the late William James Grant, Sr.

He received his early education in the public schools of Caroline County, Virginia where he spent most of his life. His participation in youth activities at St. John Baptist Church helped to form the foundation for his religious beliefs. Larry took pride in his personal appearance, especially his physical fitness that enabled him to excel in sports, especially in football. This was evidenced when he was honored with the title "Mr. Football" while he was in high school. As a high stepping drum major, he led the high school marching band with energy and charisma.

Further, in the variety of jobs he held, he was d dedicated, dependable worker who took pride in his work. As a construction foreman with the Williams Construction Company, he was skilled in operating machinery and insisted that all work must be completed to exact specifications. During his leisure hours, with a competitive spirit, he enjoyed challenging his opponents to games such as horseshoes, etc. Fishing was another activity he enjoyed with his brother Franklin who shared with him a special bond of brotherly love.

He leaves to cherish his memory three sons, Lawrence A. Grant, Jr. of Waldolf, Maryland, Marcus and Corey Grant of LaPlata, Maryland; his mother, Lucy Mae Grant of Hyattsville, Maryland; three grandchildren; two brothers, Weldon Grant of Florida and Franklin Grant of Ruther Glen; one sister, Effie Richardson of Hyattsville, Maryland; one uncle, Oliver Paige of Chesterfield, Virginia and Susete Plater (mother of Lawrence, Jr., Corey and Marcus) and a host of other relatives and friends. Larry was preceded in death by his father, a brother and a sister.

A visitation will be held on Friday, May 16, from 6 to 8 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Love, 124 Bend Farm Road, Fredericksburg, Virginia 22408, with a celebration of life to be held at the church on Saturday, May 17, at 12 noon. Burial will be private.
