Obituary

Kenneth Scott Gwathmey, affectionately known as "Kenny," peacefully departed this life on November 3, 2024. Born June 12, 1948, to the late Oliver Scott and Bessie Mae Francis Gwathmey, Kenny accepted Christ at an early age at St. Paul Baptist Church and graduated from Union High School in Bowling Green, VA in 1966. A proud veteran of the U.S. military, he served in the U.S. Army from 1968 to 1970 as a paratrooper and sharpshooter.

Family and friends appreciated Kenny's humor, craftsmanship, and kind heart. He was known for his quick-witted responses and sly smile, and he helped with countless home repairs and school art projects with his artistic talents. Kenny was also known for his intellect and was a master at Jeopardy! In addition, he loved playing pool with friends, classic cars, country music, animal shows, western movies, and the Redskins.

Kenny was proceeded in death by his parents Oliver Scott and Bessie Mae Frances (Baylor); Jacquelyn Golden, his devoted companion of 40 years; brothers William "Bill" Gwathmey and Julian Gwathmey; sisters Mary Withers and Bessie "Ashton" Gwathmey; and son-in-law Devin Leftwich.

Kenny leaves to cherish his memory loving children Lisa Leftwich and Scott Lewis; bonus children Vanessa Golden, Vernell Cosby (Darnell), Stacy Golden, Dianna Jones (Michael), Velma Ming (Keynon); grandchildren John, Naomi and Zachary Leftwich and Brianna, Chyna and Tyreese Lewis; great grandchildren Kalirose Trent and Kehlani Comfort; bonus grandchildren Antoine and Aaliyah Golden, Darnell Jr. and Danielle Cosby, Crystal and Nakita Golden, Tikisha Robinson, and Stacy Golden Jr.; sisters Jennett Parker (his devoted caregiver), Ruth Fox Duling, and Marcella Burruss; brothers Henry Gwathmey (Vanessa) and Benford Gwathmey; and a host of loving nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

A viewing will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Friday, November 08, 2024, at C.W. Edwards Funeral Home, 16476 Richmond Turnpike, Bowling Green, Virginia 22427.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 09, 2024, at St. Paul Baptist Church, 1995 Globe Road, Aylett, Virginia, 23009, with a viewing one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow in the church cemetery with military honors.
