Obituary

Julian J. Gwathmey, 65 of Caroline County, Virginia entered eternal rest on Wednesday, July 12, 2017 at McGuire Veterans Hospital in Richmond, Virginia.

Julian Javan Gwathmey, affectionately known to some as "Horse Collar" or "Ju Ju", was born July 18, 1951 in Beulahville, Virginia in King William County to the late Oliver and Bessie Gwathmey. Julian was the 8th child of 10 born to this union.

He received his education in the Caroline County School System. He was baptized at an early age and became a member of Second Baptist Church in Ruther Glen, Virginia. He joined the United States Army July 20, 1970 and served in Vietnam until October of 1971 and was honorably discharged on April 17. 1972.

His employment included Fort A. P. Hill in Bowling Green, Virginia working as a cook; various construction jobs working along side Joseph Twiggs, the late Robert "Bob" Burruss and Chester Monroe. Julian enjoyed painting and was known to be a very skilled painter. He also had a great talent for drawing. He loved planting and tending his vegetable garden. He was known for his love of riding bikes; as well as, gathering parts from old bikes and making new ones riding them proudly.

He leaves to cherish his memories his beloved siblings. Mary Withers of Laurel, Maryland, Jennett Parker of Ruther Glen, Virginia, Ruth Fox Duling (Danny) of Washington. DC, Henry Gwathmey (Vanessa) of Washington, DC, Kenneth Gwathmey (Jackie) of Ruther Glen, Virginia, Benford Gwathmey (Charlene) of Mechanicsville, Virginia and Marcella Burruss of Spotsylvania, Virginia; 3 aunts, Essie Gwathmey, Laverne Gwathmey and Frances Gwathmey; a god daughter, Desire Hunter of Ruther Glen, Virginia; devoted friends, Ronald Brown, Francine, Greg & family (Stacy), Reene Washington, Eloise, Precious and a host of other relatives and friends. Julian was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, William "Bill" Gwathmey and a sister, Bessie "Ashton Gwathmey.

A Viewing will be held Monday, July 24, at C. W. Edward Funeral Home, 16476 Richmond Turnpike, Bowling Green, Virginia 22427 from 4 to 8 p.m. and one hour before the service at the church on Tuesday.

A celebration of life will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, July 25 at St. Paul Baptist Church, 1995 Globe Road, Aylett, Virginia 23009. Burial will be private.
