Obituary

Mr. Joseph Carroll Saunders Jr, the second of six children of the late Joseph and Carrie Saunders, began his very blessed life on December 23, 1946 in Bowling Green, Virginia. In the late hours of Sunday, November 13, 2022, he peacefully entered eternal rest and went home to be with his Lord.  We, his family, humbly bow in submission to the Lord's will, thanking Him for the 75 years we were blessed to have him with us on this earth.

Joe attended Caroline County Public Schools and was a graduate of Union High School in Bowling Green, Va. After relocating and working several years in Washington, DC, as an electrician with the D C Department of Public Works, he met and married the love of his life Jean.  They were blessed with four children, Sherri, Shelley, Sharlene and Joseph III. He retired in 2010.

Joe was a long-time devoted member of Shiloh Baptist Church in Bowling Green, from the early years of his life, where he served in various capacities, most recently as President of the Trustee Board until his untimely death.

Joe was versatile and agile in sports and whether it was softball, football, basketball, volleyball, bowling, or corn hole, he was the one you wanted first on your team.

Joe enjoyed hunting, fishing, grilling, gardening, and putting together or repairing anything he could get his hands on. There was no challenge too big for him and no one that he wouldn't help. If you needed anything, he was always there. More than anything he enjoyed his family and delighted in being with them at every opportunity. Joe didn't say much, but his actions spoke loud and clear of the big heart he had.

He was preceded in death by his father, Joseph, Sr, his mother Carrie, his brother Bernard and his sister Shirley Foxx.

Joe leaves to celebrate his life and cherish his memories, his wife Jean, his daughters, Sherri Brown (Paul), Shelley Yarbough (Tony), Sharlene Hagans (Lydell) and son, Joseph (Sarah). Six grandchildren, Sherae, William, Paul Jr, Lydell Jr, Gabby and Joey.  Three brothers, James, Edward and Alonzo, sister-in-law, Esther Lee, brother/nephew Melvin Foxx, along with a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Celebration of Life Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 19, 2022 at Shiloh Baptist Church, 127 South Main Street, Bowling Green, Virginia 22427 . A viewing will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. prior to the service.

Interment will follow in Mt. Lawn Cemetery, Woodford Road, Woodford, Virginia 22580.
