James Edward Upshaw, son of the late Richard Lewis and Rosa Upshur was born on June 9, 1942, in Woodford, Virginia.

His Christian walk began at an early age, and he attended First Baptist Church in Guinea, VA. James received his formal education from Caroline County, VA. After high school, he was drafted into the armed services, where he was honorably discharged in 1968. Later, he went to work for General Motors where he retired in 2000. During his retirement, he owned Yellow Cab Company until his health declined.  James enjoyed playing the guitar, had an infectious laugh, was a friend to all.

James was preceded in death by his sister Gladys Howard and his wife Carol.

James and Carol had four children who will cherish his memory: Keith Paige, Tracy Pulis, Terri Coward and Donya Upshaw. He also has a loving granddaughter, Brittany, whom he raised as his own.

In 1997, he married Elaine Laboo and instantly gained another loving family with her children; Andre Laboo, Felicia Beard, Marketta Laboo, James Braxton, Eljoree Laboo and Emanuel Allen. Elaine will cherish the 24 years they spent together.

Addition to his wife and children, James leaves precious memories to be treasured by his loving sisters, Ruth Williams, and Mary Sue Upshur. He will be missed by a host of nieces, nephews, and grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, July 27, 2021 at C.W. Edwards Funeral Home, Inc. 16476 Richmond Turnpike, Bowling Green, Virginia 22427.
