James  Pete Carter, affectionately known as Pete was called home on Tuesday, August 1, 2023 in Washington D.C. James was one of three children born to the late Johnny and Rozell Carter on August 8, 1945 in Shumansville, Virginia. He attended school in Caroline County  and received his high school diploma from Union High School. He was a lifelong member of Mt. Tabor Baptist Church where he served faithfully as a Deacon and member of the men's choir.

Following his high school graduation, he answered he call of duty and was drafted into the United States Army. He fearlessly served his nation during the Vietnam War. Dedicating himself to safeguarding and defending his country with the 25th Infantry Division. He held the esteemed rank of Sergeant, leading and inspiring those around him with his unwavering leadership and commitment. Following his Honorable Discharge from military service James relocated to Washington, D.C. where destiny led him to encounter the love of his life, Alma Ora Carter. On March 14, 1969, Pete and Alma joined their lives in holy matrimony. From this union, their only child, Yulonda was born.

James devoted an impressive fifty years of his life to a distinguished career at The National Institutes of Health where he retired as the supervisor of the printing division. James exemplified unwavering dedication and passion in his professional pursuits. His commitment to his work was not only a reflection of his strong work ethic but also a testament to his character. He also had an entrepreneurial spirit and owned a firework business for thirty-five years.

James had many interests that illuminated his life with boundless joy and fulfillment ,a dedicated sports enthusiast and passionate bowler. He fervently supported The Washington Commanders sharing in the victories and defeats with fellow fans. He was a great cook and loved to host family dinners. James was a sharp dresser with an innate sense of elegance. He loved the opportunity to dress up for any occasions leaving a lasting impression wherever he went. Yet, perhaps his greatest delight was founded in the company of his great-grandsons. Their laughter and playfulness igniting his own youthful spirit as they created cherished memories together.. His multifaceted passions and the love he showered upon his family stand as a testament to a life lived fully. A legacy that inspires us to embrace our own pursuits and relish every moment.

James was preceded in death by his wife, Alma Carter, his two sisters; Alma Sydnor and Barbara Taylor, one godson, Johnathan Jackson and one brother in law, Daniel Owens.

He is survived by his daughter, Yulonda Carter, two granddaughters; Amber Porter (Jaron) and Autumn Ashe; two great grandsons, Avery Porter and Kai Ashe-Hardy; one brother in law Marion Taylor; two sisters in law, Yvonne Smith and Gail Washington and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family and friends.

Celebration of Life Service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 12, 2023 at Third Mt. Zion Baptist Church, 9132 Fredericksburg Turnpike, Woodford, Virginia  22580  with a viewing one hour prior to the service.

Interment will follow in Mt. Tabor Baptist Church Cemetery, 21795 Mattaponi Trail, Milford, Virginia 22514.
