Isabelle "Boots" Wright, born on June 14, 1924, in Balty, VA, was the beloved eldest of five children born to the late Clarence and Dollie Wright. She was a dedicated sister to the late Burton Wright, Luester Lee, Myrtle Johnson, and Dorothy Beverly. Today we celebrate her remarkable 100-year journey filled with love, perseverance, and dedication to her family and community.

From a young age, Isabelle demonstrated her leadership and love by moving to the big city to find work and support her family. Residing with her Aunt Dorothy, affectionately known as "Aunt Dot," Isabelle secured a job at Mrs. K's Toll House Restaurant, working alongside her aunt. It was in Washington, D.C., where she reunited with William King Wright, who had also come to the city seeking employment at Washington Gas. Their love blossomed, and they were married, building a life together despite the challenges they faced, including the loss of Isabelle's mother to cancer in 1947.

Isabelle and William's union brought forth three children: Doris, William Jr., and Claude. In 1958, the couple purchased their first home in Northwest Washington, D.C., a significant milestone made possible with the unwavering support of Isabelle's sister, Luester, who cared for their children during this transition. Their home at "525" became the heart of the family, where countless memories were made, and where Isabelle's love for cooking shone brightest. Her culinary skills, honed at Mrs. K's Toll House Restaurant earned her a promotion from salad girl to cook, where she prepared meals for distinguished guests, including two former U.S. Presidents.

Isabelle instilled in her children the values of hard work, responsibility, and dedication. Her sons, Claude and William Jr., delivered newspapers throughout D.C. neighborhoods under the watchful eye of their big sister, Doris. Their upbringing reflected Isabelle's belief that there was no room for idleness. By the time Claude retired from the U.S. Postal Service, he had amassed an astonishing 3,984 hours of sick leave—a testament to the work ethic instilled by their mother.

The family's strength was tested in December 1965 when William Jr., affectionately known as "Brother," received his draft papers during the Vietnam War. With the family's prayers and hope, Brother returned safely, bringing with him his new bride, Chongdee, and their first child, Michael. Isabelle's family continued to grow with the addition of granddaughters Michelle, Maria, and Stephanie, Doris's daughter.

Tragedy and hardship visited Isabelle over the years. In 1984, she lost her only brother, Burton, to health problems. Two years later, her beloved husband, William, was diagnosed with congestive heart failure and given only a year to live. With the family's care and support, he lived an additional three years before passing in 1989. The following year, Isabelle's father passed away at the age of 90. Over the next decade or so, she would also lose her sisters, Luester, Myrtle, and Dorothy.

Despite these losses, Isabelle remained the pillar of her family, her faith unshaken. She continued to find joy in cooking for others, retiring in 1999 after 56 years of dedicated service at Mrs. K's Toll House Restaurant. Her contributions were acknowledged in the Washington Post and honored in a ceremony on Capitol Hill by Speaker of the House, Newt Gingrich.

In 2007, Isabelle, along with her youngest son Claude, moved to Caroline County, Virginia, where they built their home on the land left by her late husband. This land, once part of their past, became the place where their future would be rooted.

Isabelle "Boots" Wright leaves behind a legacy of love, hard work, and resilience. Her life's journey, marked by enduring love and unwavering faith, has paved the way for future generations. She is survived by her 3 children: Doris Woolfolk (m. Scott Woolfolk), William King Wright, Jr. (m. Chongdee Wright), and Claude Wright; 4 grandchildren: Dr. Michael Wright (m. Dr. Treva Wright), Michelle Dollie Wright, M.Ed., Dr. Maria Wright, and Stephanie Parker (m. Marlin Parker, Sr., Esq.) and 6 great-grandchildren: Marlin Parker, Jr., Kayla Parker, Qynn Wright, Lynnox Parker, Corinne Isabella Wright, and Vincent Fuller, III who continue to carry forward the values she cherished.

Today, we celebrate the life of a woman who weathered the storms of life with grace and strength. Isabelle "Boots" Wright was not just a mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother; she was a friend, a mentor, and a beacon of light for all who knew her.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 25, 2024, at St. John Baptist Church,17080 South River Road, Woodford, Virginia 22580, with a viewing one hour prior to the service.

Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
