On Tuesday, April 8, 2014, at 7:15 a.m., God called a faithful servant, Gladys L. Carter, to enter into a peaceful, eternal rest at Spotsylvania Regional Medical Center, in Fredericksburg, Virginia.

Gladys was born on July 14, 1939, to the late Mary Sue Myers in Caroline County, Virginia.  She graduated from Union High School in Bowling Green.  She joined Shiloh Baptist Church in Bowling Green at an early age and remained a life-long member.  She worked at Fort A. P. Hill for several years before leaving to become a homemaker and caregiver to her mother and husband.

She enjoyed fishing and loved tending to her flowers and plants.  She also loved listening to gospel music, reading her bible, talking and laughing.

In 1958, Gladys was joined in holy matrimony to the late Edward L. Carter, Sr. and from that union four children were born.

She leaves to cherish her memory two daughters, Sharone Carter Hudson (Wallace) and Shelley Carter; one son, Edward L. Carter, Jr. (Ameka) all of Bowling Green, Virginia; one aunt, Geneva Hubbs of Pennsylvania; two sisters Bessie Stephens of Washington, DC and Mary Johnson (Nathaniel) of Bowling Green; thirteen grandchildren, twenty-one great grandchildren, one great great grandchild; four sisters-in-law, Alva Totten, Juliet Freeman, Barbara Sue Pleasants and Sydney Lutherford; four brothers-in-law, Nathaniel Johnson, John Childs, Tyrone Pleasants and James (Chuck) Pleasants and a host of other relatives and friends.  She was preceded in death by one daughter, Sherita D. Carter and one brother, James Myers.

A viewing will be held Thursday, April 17, from noon to 8 p.m.  at C. W. Edwards funeral Home, 16476 Richmond Turnpike, Bowling Green, Virginia 22427, with the family receiving friends from 7 to 8 p.m.

A celebration of life will be at 11 a.m. on Friday, April 18, at Shiloh Baptist Church, 127 S. Main Street, Bowling Green, Virginia.  Interment will follow at St. James Baptist Church Cemetery, Milford, Virginia.
