George Lewis Johnson, Sr., 78, of Woodford, Virginia, went home to be with Jesus on Sunday, April 3, 2011.
George was born on May 18, 1932 in Caroline County, Virginia. to the late Walter Johnson and Marie A. Lewis. He was one of seven children.
George served in the U.S. Army and he was honorably discharged.
George was joined into holy matrimony to the late Deaconness Sallie M. Johnson. To this union three sons were born; George S. G. Johnson, Howard Bradley Johnson, and Kenneth L. Johnson.
He joined First Baptist Church at and early age. He was a faithful member and participated in the Men's and Usher Ministries, and the Men's Club.
George began working at an early age for several different companies to include A.P. Dillard and Rozell Trucking and he drove for both companies. George worked for and retired from Colonial Concrete after 30 years of service.
George leaves to cherish his memory; three sons, George S. G. Johnson (Joyce), Howard Bradley Johnson, and Kenneth L. Johnson (Linette); three sisters; Marian Cannon of Florence, Alabama, Rev. Diana Cherry of Clinton, Maryland, and Evangelist Arlene Johnson of Bowling Green, Virginia; two brothers, Phillip Young of Middletown, Rhode Island and Eugene Frye of Woodford, Virginia; one sister-in-law, Mildred Jackson (Arthur) of Ashburn, Virginia; five grandchildren, three great grandchildren, four godchildren, a devoted friend, Ms. Nancy Parker and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Visitation will be Thursday, April 7, from 12 noon to 8 p.m. at C. W. Edwards Funeral Home with the family receiving friends from 7 to 8 p.m.
A Celebration of Life will be at 11 a.m. on Friday, April 8, at First Baptist Church, 9262 Guinea Station Road, Woodford, Virginia 22580, with Rev. Dr. Carl Bentley, officiating. Burial will be in the Guss Family Cemetery.
