Evelyn Brinkley, affectionately known as "Momma Evelyn" the daughter of the late Richard H. Wallace and Georgia L. Atkins (George) was born on February 12, 1931 in Newport News, Virginia. She was called home to receive her reward at 10:30pm on March 14, 2019 at her residence. She was surrounded by her family.
Evelyn received her education in Newport News, Virginia. She earned her Theological License in 1971 in Washington, DC.
Evelyn was raised in a Christian home. She joined Mt. Airey Baptist Church in Washington, DC. Later in life she was called into the ministry to preach. She was the Assistant Pastor of Four Gospel Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. Elmore Jones in N.W. Washington, DC. After moving to Caroline County, VA in 1975, she became the Assistant Pastor of Mt. Sinai Baptist Church in Rhodesville, VA under the leadership of Rev. William Rudd. In 1986, she became Pastor of Mt. Sinai Baptist Church. She remained Pastor there until 1995. Her congregation loved her cooking and her "Keeping it 100 Percent" sermons. In 2016 she joined Third Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Woodford, VA.
In the middle 1970's, Evelyn opened and operated a "Mom and Pop" store on Paige Road in Woodford, VA.
Evelyn was an affectionate and loving person. She was a mother figure to many. She counseled many along her journey. She was always there when called upon. She loved speaking on the goodness of the Lord, and how he had changed her life.
Evelyn married Percy Brinkley on April 26, 1996.
She was preceded in the death by her parents; brothers, James B. Davis, Melvin Atkins, Wilbert U. Atkins; sisters, Henrietta Wallace and Dr. Cheryl Boswell; sons Ernest A. Johnson, Gerard Johnson; and daughters Jean P. McWhirter and Stephanie L. Carrington.
She leaves to cherish her memory her sons, Joseph M. Johnson, Derrick K. Johnson; daughters, Renia M. Holmes(Wilbert), Olivia Bell(Steven), and Sabrina Walker, daughter in law Wanda Johnson. Grandchildren: Eurainia McWhirter, Nichole McWhirter, Siera Thurston, Ernest Johnson, Sheila Teasley, Ronsheka Johnson, Emoni Love, Joseph Johnson, Jr. , Frankie Carrington(Ebony), Nelvin Carrington, Latoya Carrington-White(Trevor), Derrick Carrington, Terrell Mercer(Lisa), Evelyn Mercer, Vincent Tyson, James Mercer, Sheritria Cottman(Trevor), Derika Johnson, Taneshia Johnson, Shiedah Johnson, Gerard Johnson, Jonathan E. Walker, Ryeieshia S. Walker, Thurston E. Williams. 71 Great Grandchildren and 1 Great- Great Grandchild. Brother, Rev. William H. Davis; sisters Olivia Williams, Darlene Powell, Joanne Covington(George), Linda Phillips(Roy), Brenda Clark, and Jacqueline Lewis, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives and friends.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 12 noon on Saturday, March 23, 2019 at Third Mount Zion Baptist Church, 9132 Fredericksburg Turnpike, Woodford, Virginia 22580 with a viewing one hour prior to the service.
Interment will be held at 12 noon on Monday, March 25, 2019 in the Hampton Memorial Gardens, 155 Butler Farm Road, Hampton, Virginia 23666.
