Deacon Emmett Roosevelt Childs entered eternal rest peacefully on Saturday, June 29, 2024, at Henrico Doctor's Parham Campus. He was born to the late Richard Allen Childs and Nellie Coleman Childs, on August 29, 1940, in Caroline County, Virginia. Emmett attended Caroline County Public Schools and graduated from Union High School in 1960 in Bowling Green, Virginia. At an early age Emmett accepted his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and joined the Mount Salem Baptist Church, in Ruther Glen, Virginia. Emmett would always talk about the goodness of God.

He enjoyed watching his favorite television shows, Family Feud, Judge Judy and the TBN gospel station. Emmett loved his football team none other than the Dallas Cowboys. When the Dallas Cowboys would win against the Commander, his soft voice suddenly would get loud with lots of jokes "the Boys did it again" with the biggest smile.

Emmett married the love of his life, Betty Jane Holmes on November 18, 1965. From this union, four wonderful children were born: Kevin, Sheila, Kenneth and Shakenna.

Emmett was well known to his community. He was a hair barber for many years, he enjoyed being a barber and talking with his clients about the good old days, he worked for Dixie Trailer for twenty years, Henrico Public Schools in Henrico, Virginia for five years. After working various jobs, Emmett decided to start his own cleaning business, Childs's Cleaning Service LLC., for over forty years, with the help of his family. He served numerous jobs including, Union Bankshares, Bowling Green, Post Office, Dawn Community Doctors, King William Community Doctors, Caroline County Public Schools Transportation for Twenty-seven years.

Emmett was always a humble soft-spoken man; he was a great provider for his family. Emmett loved to sing and hum his hymnal songs, he could be heard throughout the house and praying. He was a true man of God, he often talked about the love and blessings from God, he had a loving heart to reach out to help anyone if need be. He loved all of his grandchildren and great grandchildren, but one grandson Montinique was a son to his poppy, if anything would come up that he couldn't do or figure out, he would say don't worry about it " I know Monny can help me get it done" He had so much confidence and was very proud of his Monny. Emmett knew without a doubt he could always depend on Montinique and often he shared his love about Montinique. When Montinique walked in the house, his poppy would have the biggest smile. Thanks to God he taught Montinique a lot about becoming a man and serving God and doing the right things in life.

Emmett was a very dedicated man to God and his church family. He did various ministries over the many years in his church.

Deacon Emmett will be remembered as a devoted, loving husband, father, grandfather, great father and brother. He will be greatly missed and forever in our hearts.

His passing leaves a void in the lives of many who will cherish fond memories: His beloved wife Betty; his children Kevin Childs (Jeryl) Sheila Childs, Kenneth Childs ( Sheryl ) Shakenna Childs, Montinique Freeman Sr. (God son); four grandchildren; Montinique Q. Freeman Sr. (Jasmine) Shaneka Childs, Joshua Childs, Jleah Hunter and Devon Keys; three great grandchildren; Montinique Freeman Jr, Ryan Williams, Elias Freeman; two brothers; Ervin Childs( Bearlin) Vincent Childs( LaShay). Host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Emmett's twenty-four hours a day caregiver; his loving wife Betty, Shakenna (daughter) and Jleah Hunter (granddaughter) He received great care through his entire illness. All of Emmett Children; Kevin, Sheila, Kenneth, Montinique would help and provide whatever dad/poppy would need or want. His family showed so much love for him. Emmett's devoted brother, Vincent Childs, who never missed a day from calling his brother. He would wait patiently for his phone to ring because it was a sure thing his brother was going to call him and when the phone ring he would be smiling saying "that's nobody but Vincent" and answer quickly, up to his last days he would say I know Vincent going to check on me but I don't want him worrying about me.

We were so blessed to have John Evans, Wayne Childs, Carl Hall, David Hunter and Leroy Overton, for helping in so many ways and was always ready to do what was asked of them without hesitation.

Visitation will be held Friday, July 12, 2024, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Salem Baptist Church, 16170 Moore's Mill Road, Ruther Glen, Virginia 22546

Celebration of Life Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 13, 2024, at Mt. Salem Baptist Church, 16170 Moore's Mill Road, Ruther Glen, Virginia 22546, with a viewing one hour prior to the service.
