On October 3, 2016, Heaven called an angel home, our beloved mother, Dorothy Elizabeth Nivens in her home of The Bronx, New York. Dorothy, endearingly called (Dot) by many was born April 22, 1937, in Bowling Green, Virginia to the late Richard B. Upshaw, Sr. and Alice Golden Upshaw and accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior at an early age at Shiloh Baptist Church.

Dorothy was educated in the Caroline County Public Schools and upon graduation from high school, she relocated to New York City to embark on her future. Dorothy was employed as a seamstress in New York's garment district in Manhattan and in 1961, she married her husband of forty years, the late Murray Nivens and from that union they were blessed with two daughters and one son.

Dorothy loved reading God's word and a good baseball game, but most of all, she loved cooking for her family. She was most famous for her cakes amongst family and friends but it is the pancakes and grilled cheese sandwiches that will always be remembered by her grandchildren. She was the Matriarch of her neighborhood and the oldest living person in her building from wince she raised her expressed great sadness over the news of her passing. She held life with dignity and was a pillar of strength in the torment of life's storms, teaching her children to hold on to God's unchanging hand and lean on his infinite wisdom.

Solomon speaks of a woman like Dorothy! Proverbs 31: 29 -31

Many women have done excellent but Dorothy surpassed them all. Charm is deceitful and beauty is vain. But a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised!! Give her the fruit of her hands and let her works praise her in the gates.

A viewing will be held Friday, October 14, from 4 to 8 p.m. at C. W. Edwards Funeral Home and one hour before the service on Saturday.

A celebration of life will be held at 12 noon, Saturday, October 15, at C. W. Edwards Funeral Home, 16476 Richmond Turnpike, Bowling Green, Virginia 22427. Interment to follow immediately following the service at Mt. Lawn Cemetery, Woodford, Virginia.
