On April 2, 2025, Doris Rock Carter embraced her heavenly call, surrounded by her daughter and grandchildren as she peacefully transitioned at 12:22 a.m. in St. Mary's Hospital, Richmond, Virginia. Born on July 28, 1941, to the late Walter T. and Carrie Rock in Milford, Virginia.

Doris's life was rooted in grace and service. A graduate of Union High School's Class of 1959, Doris received her education in Caroline
County Public Schools. She accepted Christ early in life and remained a devoted member of St. John Baptist Church, where her contributions included serving as Church Secretary for 18 years, Trustee, Treasurer, Clerk, and an active member of the Pastor's Support
Ministry, Missionary Ministry, Chancel Choir, and Program Planning Committee. Doris also faithfully participated in Bible Study. Her sense of duty extended into the broader community, where she made an impact through her involvement with the American Cancer Board, Museum Board, Friends of the Library Board for more than 10 years, AARP Tax Aide volunteer work for a decade, and NAACP lifetime membership. She diligently served at the voting polls for 20 years.

Doris married Alfred Reginald Carter on October 17, 1964, and they were blessed with a loving daughter.

After 31 years of service as Secretary/Bookkeeper for Caroline County Public Schools, Doris retired in 1998. She later worked part-time at Luck Chevrolet in Ashland, Virginia, and dedicated 18 years of service as Church Secretary at St. John Baptist Church.

Doris was also known as "Lady D," was a model of class, elegance, and professionalism, completing every task with excellence. Guided by principles and compassion, she was honest yet empathetic—a true missionary with a heart for helping others. Doris found joy in cooking, particularly baking cakes and pies to share with family and friends. Her meals were always a delight, and visitors to her home were assured of a warm welcome and a hearty meal. Above all, Doris exemplified selflessness, always seeking ways to be a blessing to those in need without seeking recognition for her deeds.
In addition to her parents, Doris was preceded in death by her devoted husband, Alfred Carter, sisters, Mildred and Mary Ellen and brother, Walter T. Jr.
She leaves cherished and fond memories to her devoted daughter, Roxanne (Rodney Harris) of Dover, Delaware; one loving sister, Margaret Chambers of Fredericksburg, Virginia; one devoted brother, Larry Rock of Milford, Virginia; two loving grandchildren, Autumn and Arion Kirven, Jr. of Milford, Virginia, uncle, Lucius Fortune (Myrtle); four sisters-  in-law, Annie Anderson, Helen Johnson, Ruth Wilson and Theresa Rock Gaines (James);  brother-in-law, Willie Johnson and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

A visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Saturday April 12, 2025, at the C.W. Edwards Funeral Home, Inc. 16476 Richmond Turnpike, Bowling Green, Virginia 22427.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, April 13, 2025, at St. John Baptist Church, 17080 South River Road, Woodford, Virginia 22580, with a viewing one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow in the church cemetery
