Deacon John W. Monte, 102 of Bowling Green, Virginia entered eternal rest on Saturday, September 16, 2017 at the Bowling Green Health & Rehabilitation Center.

He was the second child and only son of the late John Giles Monte and Lucy Beatrice Paige Monte. He was born on Friday, December 4, 1914. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Wilson Monte, of 60 years; his parents and sisters, Alma Beatrice "Bea", Fannye, Julia and Hester Bernice.

Deacon Monte was educated in the Caroline County Public School System and graduated from Union High School. He accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized at Second Mount Calvary Baptist Church of which his grandfather was a founding member.

Deacon Monte lived to the impressive age of 102 (almost 103) years. Some of his many accomplishments include his service in the U.S. Army during World War II, where he served four years in Germany, France, and Scotland and the Korean War. He was an avid civil rights activist a member in The Congress for Racial Equality (CORE) and an organizer/president of the first union for Washington Hospital Center workers. Not only was he a lifelong member of Second Mount Calvary Baptist Church, he served as a dedicated leader in the Sunday School Union, a passionate Sunday School teacher, a faithful Trustee, and an esteemed Deacon until his death.

For all who knew "Uncle John" family was the highlight of his life. He leaves devoted nieces; Alberta, Yvonne, Saundra, Kay, Patricia and Veronica; a nephew, Anthony; sisters-in-law, Katherine Conrad and Reverend Inez Dawson; a host of loving cousins, great nieces and nephews and friends to cherish his memory.

A visitation will be held on Friday, September 22, 2017 from 4 to 8 p.m. at Second Mount Calvary Baptist Church 17247 New Baltimore Road, Milford, Virginia 22514 with family receiving friends at the Christian wake from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 23, 2017 at the church with a viewing one hour prior to the service.

Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery, Wrightsville Road, Bowling Green, Virginia 22427
