On the afternoon of Monday, July 1, 2019, an angel of the Lord arrived at Spotsylvania Regional Hospital and whispered "Your work is done, it's time to come home."
Carrie was the oldest child of seven children born to Lawrence and Evelyn Fortune on April 17, 1934. She was followed by her siblings, Lawrence (deceased), Bennie (deceased), James (deceased), Eddie, Buster and Bertha Inez (deceased).
At an early age she joined Mt Zion Baptist Church in Sparta, Va., but later moved her membership to St. Stephen's in August 1987 which she faithfully attended until her health prevented her from being present.
On April 26, 1952 she married Baxter "Peter" Rollins they were married for 35 years and to this union ten children were born, the baseball team that Peter said he wanted.
Cherishing her memories and thanking God for her life are her children; Jerrel (Jessie), Beverly (Michael), Garry (Barbara), Steve (Joyce), Edward (Diane), Baxter (Carla), Donna (Leslie), Ora, Patsy (Taylor), and Sean (Sophelia);brothers, Eddie Fortune and Buster Fortune (Blanche);32 grandchildren (1 deceased); 24 great-grandchildren (with one on the way); adopted brother, Rev. William Gibson/Jean Gibson; aunt Clara Byrd; sister in law, Clara Fortune; daughter in laws Sheila, Helena Mary, and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
A viewing will be held from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Friday, July 5, 2019 at C.W. Edwards Funeral Home, Inc, 16476 Richmond Turnpike, Bowling Green, Virginia 22427
Funeral services will be held on Saturday July 6, 2019 at 12 noon at St. Stephens Baptist Church 29436 Sparta Road, Milford, VA 22514 with viewing one hour prior to service.
Reverend Jared Beasley will be officiating and the eulogy will be delivered by Pastor Michael Ferguson.
Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
