Obituary

Bertha Green Cheeks was born July 28, 1927, in Beulaville, VA, to the late John W. Jackson and Myrtle G. Jackson. Bertha entered into eternal rest on Tuesday, May 10, 2022 at her daughter's residence in Washington, D.C.

She was educated in Beulaville's Public Schools and worked for New Executive Office Building GSI, now known as GSA, where she retired in May 1992. Joining her in love, Oscar A. Cheeks, who preceded her in death on April 10, 1987.

Affectionately known as "Granny," she loved cooking her mac & cheese, sweet potatoes pies, and cakes. She also enjoyed going on outings to baseball games, bowling, picnics, cruises, and especially Mt Bethel beach, on the 4th of July week- end with Trinidad Baptist Church.

Surviving Cancer was just the beginning of her strength. She was hardworking, nurturing, family-oriented, always willing to give a helping hand, and will not hesitate to put you in your place if she had to. Between her bike on the porch or taking a walk around Holbrook Street, she touched the hearts of many in the neighborhood.

Flowers and her cards were her to go to; she posted every card for every memorable holiday. Birthdays were always the best because we can all count on her calling to sing "Happy Birthday" in her famous squeaky voice. She would sit in her favorite chair by the window, looking out at the people walking by and watching her favorite channels on ABC, Fox5, Lifetime movies, and Breeze Country Hand- dancing show.

Bertha was preceded in death by her husband, Oscar A Cheeks who preceded her in death on April 10, 1987 and her brothers and and sisters,  Leroy, Eleanor. Knovell, Welford and Maxine.

She is survived by her brother John E. Jackson and Sister Doris J. Robinson both of Aylett, VA.  She leaves to cherish her memories her children Everett Green & Eunice Pollard both of Aylett, Va, Bertie Whittington (Craig) of Salisbury, MD, Bruce Cheeks & Shelia Ormsby of Washington, DC; Grandchildren, Topeka, Horace (Rhonda), Anita (Robert), Jason (Lisa), Brien, Chana (Cecil), Shawna, Shaun (Ciera), Ayanna, Krystal, Shawncee' (Khari Sr); 22 great-grandchildren; 12 great-great grandchildren; sister-in-law Evelyn, nieces, nephews, other relatives and her longtime friend Ethel Brown. Granny will be deeply missed by all that knew and loved her!
