Bernard Lee
Lewis
May 3, 1941 — Aug 28, 2026
Woodford, VA
Bernard Lee Lewis was born on May 3, 1941, to the late Jacob and Gladys Lewis. He departed this life on August 28, 2026, at Mary Washington Hospital Hospital in Fredericksburg, Virginia. He gave his life to Christ at an early age and was a member of Third Mount Zion Baptist Church.
On September 16, 1961, Bernard married the love of his life, Helen Lewis. Their union was blessed with two children and 64 years full of love and memories.
Bernard had many achievements throughout his life such as being the first African American man to drive the Wonder Bread truck in Fredericksburg, Virginia; creating and coaching his softball team, The Soul Trotters; and competing in horseshoe competitions, where he won many trophies. His days consisted of driving to the local corner store several times a day for a Diet Mountain Dew until his health failed him. Bernard was not typically hard to find. You could catch him in the living room watching a game show, westerns, court tv or a baseball game.
Bernard was a hardworking and dedicated individual who spent many years of employment at Tidewater Veneer Company, R.C. Cola, Moore's Business Forms and American Stone Mix, Inc.
Bernard was not a man of many words but had the heart of gold. He loved when the family came over especially the grandchildren, whom he loved to spoil. Every time one of them would walk in the house, they were guaranteed to be greeted with "Hey Knucklehead or Hey Turkey".
Bernard was preceded in death by his mother and father, Gladys and Jacob Lewis; four brothers, Eddie Lewis, Lenard Lewis, Joe Lewis, Herman Lewis; three sisters Beatrice Lewis, Mary Morris and Rosa Lewis.
Bernard leaves cherished and loving memories to his wife Helen Lewis of Woodford, VA; one son Karan Lewis of Fredericksburg, VA; one daughter, Myra Lewis Redmond of Woodford, VA; three grand daughters; LaTanya Lewis, Ceyonna Lewis, and Tiara Monroe; two great-grandsons: Cairo Lewis and Halo Jones; one sister, Emma Lou Christopher of Fredericksburg, VA; one brother Charles Lewis of Woodford, VA; two sister-in-law, Rosemarie Lewis and Alice Armstead; a host of nieces, nephews' other relatives and friends.
