Obituary

Barbara Ann Gwathmey was the eldest of five girls. She was born to Virgie M Anderson and to the late James W Anderson in Ruther Glen, Virginia on August 22,1944.

Barbara was an active member of Second Baptist Church in Ruther Glen, Virginia.  She was a natural care-giver, and always putting others first. Barbara moved from Virginia to Washington, DC shortly after graduating from high school, and studied at the University of District of Columbia to be a Certified Nursing Assistant. Barbara worked in the medical field for over 30 years until she was physically unable to do so.
She continued to help in other ways by being a great mother, daughter, grandmother, sister, and friend. Barbara loved the Lord and was strong in her faith. Through all of her medical battles, she knew that Jesus was her Lord and savior, and through him all things are possible.
She fought a good fight until the very end, and always remained in great spirit.
She always said her grandson Jay was a little professor, and thought he was the brightest and smartest boy that she had ever met. He was the boy that she never had, and in her eyes he could do no wrong. He would come up to her 50 times a day to give her a hug, fix her hot tea, and say I love you grand-ma.
She rolled her eyes at her granddaughter Kayla and called her Wild Child, but as soon as Kayla turned her back she laughed at the crazy things that she would do. Kayla and Grandma had their favorite song that they would sing together by J.J. Hariston -  (Lyrics) My Hallelujah belongs to you... My Hallelujah belongs to you!   You deserve it! you deserve it!  Barbara Ann, you deserve It , and you have gainfully earned your wings~

She is survived by her daughter; Anita Woodward; son in law, Michael Woodward; mother, Virgie M. Anderson; grandson, Jorrell Swann, Jr; granddaughter, Mikayla Robb; four sisters, Marian Roberts, Joan Richardson, Jessie Anderson and Jane Anderson; and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

A Celebration of Life graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 19, 2020 at Second Baptist Church, 26725 Ruther Glen Road, Ruther Glen, Virginia 22546, with a  viewing one prior to the service.

Online streaming will be available on Facebook live under C.W. Edwards Funeral Home, Inc.
