Addie Estelle Fortune, affectionately known as "Mema", entered eternal life on Saturday, February 10, 2024, in the comforts of her home in Fredericksburg, VA after battling a long illness. She was born on February 15, 1942, in Essex County, Virginia to the late James Robinson and the late Mary Robinson Nickens.
Addie attended Essex County public schools in Virginia. On March 28, 1962, she married Joseph Fortune in La Plata, MD. From this union one daughter, Darlene Breeden, and one son, Joseph Allen Fortune were born.
The most important role of her life was the dedication she had to raising her two children, her grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Addie was very well known for caring for many of the neighborhood children and the children of many of her family members up until her health began to decline.
Addie was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Joseph Fortune, sisters; Pearl Johnson, Dorothy Coleman, Fannie Coleman, Lola Hinson and Gladys Johnson; brothers, James Robinson, Ryland Robinson, Gilbert Nickens and Walter Robinson and a special niece with whom she spoke with daily, Deborah "Jean" Robinson
Addie leaves to cherish her memory, a daughter, Darlene Breeden, a son, Joseph Allen Fortune (Pam), two sisters, Helen Morgan and Emma Childs; one granddaughter, Iris "Nikki" Rosado, two grandsons, Joseph Lipscomb and Joshua Fortune; two great granddaughters, Noelle and Nadia Banawoe; a very special niece who talked with her daily, Elsie Johnson; and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
A homegoing service will be held 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 17, 2024, at Ebenezer Baptist Church, 3207 Quarter Hill Road, Supply, VA 22436 with a viewing one hour prior to the service. Rev. Irving Woolfolk will be delivering the eulogy.
Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
